Approve the hiring of Rebecca Thomas as Community Service Officer I effective Saturday, June 12, 2010
at step A of pay grade 2.
Background/Discussion
On Monday, Apri112, 2010 the Council voted to replace the Community Service Officer I (CSO I)
position vacated by the promotion of Jesse Smith to Police Officer. The CSO I position covers evenings
and weekends, and supplements patrol operations. The position was posted internally and four internal
candidates applied. Following the process, Rebecca Thomas, the department's 2009 summer intern, was
selected as the leading candidate.
*NOTE* Rebecca has recently completed her Bachelor's Degree in law enforcement from Bemidji State
University and is currently attending the law enforcement skills program at Alexandria Technical College,
which ends July 23, 2010. Due to the scheduling of classes it is the intent of the department to begin her
employment status on a part-time basis, covering weekend shifts. Once she has completed her skills
training her status will become full-time covering weekends and evenings.
Financial Impact
This position was vacated due to the promotion of the former occupant. The funds were budgeted for
this position in 2010; the new CSO will start at the first step of the pay scale, so an overall savings will be
realized.
