The Elk River Fire Department is requesting authorization to advertise and recruit new firefighters.
Background/Discussion
The Elk River Fire Department is looking to fill three immediate vacancies. Two of the vacancies axe due
to the recent retirements of Rob Dreissig and Kenneth ("Jay") Dehn, who, combined, contributed over
64 years of service to the community. Prior to the retirements of Rob and Jay, the department had one
existing vacancy.
The department anticipates the application/selection process to conclude in a few months. The process
will include a mandatory informational session, application period, interview process, and physical
agility/medical screening. Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the department
hopes to establish an eligibility list that will remain in effect for a two year term or until the list is
exhausted, whichever occurs first.
Financial Impact
The estimated cost impact is approximately $1,000-$1,500 for each firefighter position filled for training
related expenses. The total amount invested into the process is dependant upon the individual's prior
experience and level of certification (if any). The department does have spare gear available and is
optimistic that this gear can be used for the new firefighters.
The establishment of an eligibility list will help minimize future costs with respect to the overall
recruitment process and will allow the department to fill vacancies in a more timely fashion. The
department will, however, continue to ask for Council approval prior to filling any future vacancies even
with the establishment of an eligibility list.
