Hot Topic) of the Month
The Parks and Recreation Department is in the process of gearing up for our extensive
2010 summer program offerings. May is typically a busy month of training summer staff
and putting the final touches on program planning all while wrapping up spring activities.
An extensive variety of summer programs will be offered for participants of all ages.
Some examples of youth opportunities include sports classes in t-ball, flag football,
soccer and lacrosse as well as enrichment opportunities in Safety Camp and Summer
Playground Adventures. Opportunities for adults include summer softball, Farmers
Market, and canoeing down the Mississippi. Families will have the opportunity to enjoy
Movies in the Park, Kidstock music entertainment, and the Riverfront Concert Series at
River's Edge Commons Park.
A new program that was run this spring was a ride on the new Northstar Commuter Rail
Line. Members of the community were able to sign up for the trip which took them for a
ride to downtown Minneapolis where they learned how to transfer to light rail line which
they then took for a shopping excursion to the Mall of America. The trip was lead by
Parks and Recreation staff. There was great interest in the trip with the 100 available
spots filling very quickly. Another trip is being planned in August.

Currently 438 memberships have been paid for 2010
May -Older Americans Month Many special activities were planned beyond the
usual programming.
An example of events at 413 Proctor were:
• The author of Images of America, Elk River did a book signing
^ Going Green Day presentation by Rebecca Haug from the Ciry of Elk River
• A Genealogy Class
An opportunity to meet the Police and Fire Chiefs
An example of events at 350 Evans:
• A special music program and an evening bingo (by students form the MN
School of Business)
• The Elk River, Coon Rapids and Monticello Senior Centers got together for
the 19'" year to play Bridge, 500, Cribbage and Bingo
Currently working on new floor covering in the Coffee Shop and Fitness Area. Also
at this time we will flip flop the Fitness and Pool areas.
