Dear Pat,
Since the first of January, the Elk River Area Arts Council
has raised well over the $5,000 needed for the release of the
matching funds that you have budgeted for us in 2001. The Arts
council has been active this year with many projects.
The Strings for Youth Program has almost doubled in size,
probably because of a change in our promotional program. We hope
to see more growth again this year. The national juried art show
puts Elk River on the map more than any other program offered in
the area. It is the only national art show in the state, and is
second in size and prizes only to the Minnesota State Fair
Exhibit.
Collaborative programs are now playing a major role in our
programming. We are collaborating on a two year program with
Community Education to provide bus trips to arts events for
children and their families. We have collaborated with the
Sherburne Historical Society to produce the highly successful
play "Tonsorial Tales" which presented a history of Elk River for
the benefit of those new to the co~.unity in an effort tc make
everyone feel that this is their community.
We were very active with the 2001 Arts Alliance in putting
on the ArtSoup event this past June. These two organizations
have worked closely together since the Alliance came into
existence. We offered two workshops to artists this year. We
will again act as fiscal agent for the community Christmas
concert being planned for December.
On September 17, in partnership with the 2001 Arts Alliance
and Operation ER and in response to community concerns, we will
present the first of three sessions helping the community to more
fully celebrate and support the arts in the Elk River area.
Sharon Tracy, a long time Elk River resident, and recently
retired teacher, accepted the position of Executive Director last
October. It is through her effort that much of the increase in
our programming has come about.
We hope that the City will continue to provide funding for
our programs in 2002. Increased opportunities through the
Central Minnesota Arts Board from increased state funding will
continue to help us only if we are able to increase our matching
funds. Any funds beyond the current $5,000 that you can make
available to us in the future will be put to good use in
promoting Elk River, raising matching funds from other sources,
and in serving our community.
Please note on our financial statement that the dates
covered cause an imbalance of income and expenses because of the
time that monies are either received or spent. We carefully
follow our expenses project by project. As of August 31, we have
$11,750 on hand. Of this, $8,267 is budgeted to specific
projects, leaving #3,483 to cover normal operating expenses.
