I am writing to express my feelings on the recent driveway removal of one of
my neighbors. Apparently, this driveway did not meet with city ordinances,
and these people were ordered to rip out this driveway. I can understand
that there must be rules and regulations, but I do not understand why this
driveway could not remain as it was. This driveway is on a dead-end street,
with basically no traffic. The only people that travel this street are the
people that live on it. What was your point in demanding that this driveway
be ripped up? Do you try to work with the people in this town? This home is
a beautiful home, built on the river, and had a beautiful driveway that
people would certainly envy. I'm sure that the taxes that this family pays
are quite high. Come on Elk River, work with your people!! This was a
ridiculous move.

Driveway

The builder requested a variance after the driveway was installed which the
City Council denied. While the driveway is located in an area of very
little traffic, the purpose for limiting the size of driveways is to limit
the amount of hard surface in the front yard and to encourage sod and other
plantings. Not everyone with wide driveways would install such a driveway,
and granting the variance would have allowed all types of driveways, some
less pleasing than others.
