Background/Discussion On Apri121, 2007, Elk River's Energy City Commission (ECC) held its first Energy Expo at the Twin Lakes Elementary School with Paul Douglas as the Keynote Speaker. In 2008, the Energy Expo was held at the City Hall Campus and the emphasis was on the students from Spectrum Charter School featuring their Energy Enny's and Energy Innovation Projects. In 2009, the Energy Expo was held again at the Twin Lakes Elementary School. Joe Shuster, author of the book "Beyond Fossil Fools: A Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040" was the Keynote Speaker. The ECC had its fourth Energy Expo on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Elk River High School. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) estimated that over 600 people attended the event. Will Steger was the Keynote Speaker. The ECC worked with the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) staff to provide activities for children as well as the Elk River Landfill teaching children how a landfill is made with the use of candy. Food was provided by Dunn Bros. and Blink Bonnie who both expressed interest in being part of any future expos. The ECC is in the early stages of planning the fifth Energy Expo. The date has not been selected but the plan is to hold it at the Elk River High School again. Financial Impact Over the past three years, the City has budgeted the following: • 2007 - $30,000 • 2008 - $20,000 • 2009 - $10,000 • 2010 - $5,000 As depicted on the attached 2010 Energy Expo budget, the costs were kept down. The remaining funds have been reallocated into the Energy City marketing budget.
