Hot Topic(s~ of the Month
July is the month in which the majority of our summer programs are in full operation.
From the Summer Playground Adventure program to Adult Softball, a full compliment of
activities for Elk River residents of all ages has been offered.
A major summer event is the Single Track Attach Mountain Bike Race held on Sunday,
July 18th. This race brought in over 300 mountain bike racers to Hillside City Park from
around the region. When adding racers with spectators approximately 1,000 people
attended the all day event. A variety of races for all abilities and ages were offered.
Feedback from racers states that this race is one of the best on the Minnesota Mountain
Bike Series circuit due to the excellent venue and organization.

Department Updates
The fall edition of the program guide has been completed. The guide has been mailed to
participants as well as distributed throughout the community at kiosks and Lions Park
Center. The guide is also posted on the Ciry Website. We invite community members to
check out the wide variety of recreational opportunities being offered.
The changes to the ordinance relating to hunting near pazks and trials that was discussed at
the July 14`h Parks and Recreation Commission meeting was reviewed at the July 19's City
Council Meeting. The Council had several additional revision requests for the ordinance so
the item was tabled to the August 2"d Council meeting. At the August 2"d Council meeting
the ordinance adjustments were approved. The summary of the ordinance aze as follows:
• Restricts hunting within 500 feet of a park or trail unless a special permit has been
obtained from the Police Departtnent
• Allowance for city approved azchery ranges, biathlon ranges, and gun clubs
At the July 14s' Pazks and Recreation Commission Meeting discussion was held regarding
negative behavior by users of the Great Northern Trail in relation to private properties
adjacent to the trail. Staff is currently working on developing signage to be posted on the
trail to educate users of proper trial etiquette.
At the July 14's Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting the Commission was updated on
the status of Bailey Point. The property owner has approached the City to determine if the
Ciry has interest in purchasing the property with the intent of adding a pazk to the system.
The council is planning to discuss this item at an upcoming work session.

• The fitness area floor has been ordered. We are stazting next week to move the wall
to change the Fitness and Pool azeas azound.
• Night to Unite will be held at both sites. Next month will provide numbers.
• All senior center staff has now been trained to offer Matter of Balance classes in the
neaz future.

Department Updates -Parks and Recreation Director
The City is in the process of hiring a Parks and Recreation Director. 52 applications for the
position have been received. The next step in the process will be to select a group of
candidates to be interviewed. The group of candidates to be interviewed will be assembled
over the next several weeks.
