The most recent meeting of the Elk River YMCA Founder's Committee was held on June 12, 2003, at Lions Park Center. Attached for your information are the agenda from that meeting and the minutes from its recent previous meeting which was held on May 8, 2003. Also attached is a brief memo from Chad Lanners which indicates that he has accepted the Executive Director position for the Emma B. Howe YMCA that is in Coon Rapids. Chad has been our YMCA contact person and organizer of the Elk River project. With this YMCA change in staffing, there is boufid to be some change in how things proceed forward with the YMCA project. This transitior~ plan was briefly discussed at the June 12 meeting. Mayor F-dinzing typically provides the monthly update to the City Council on YMCA Committee activities but she was not in attendance at the June 12 meeting so I will be providing this update to the City CounCil. TOPIC DIS CUSSION ACTION Meeting called to order 7:10am. Mary E. 1st Stephanie K. 2nd Opening Thought Todd Schoffelman Committee Updates The Program Committee met April 28th. Their focus is now Fall programming. Would like to Program Committee begin a tutoring program through the YMCA Learning Academy. This is a new program which is Ken Ebel proving to be very successful at the Northwest YMCA. The committee is also very excited about the possibility of starting Youth in Government. It is a great civics event. The committee would like to find someone to volunteer to coordinate these Fall programs. They have looked at marketing, maybe setting up a website. Todd Schoffelman, Ken Ebel, and Chad will visit with Dr. Jensen regarding both of these programs. Communications Would like to partner with the Park & Rec. on a regular basis to publicize what we are doing. The Committee committee looked at participating in some of the local parades and other special events. Upcoming Family Nights are June 4, and August 27. Joni Lawrence and Connie Gandrud have volunteered to staff the June 4th event. There is still a need for volunteers for August. Strategic Planning The Committee has been working on the Founders Campaign. It needs to involve hundreds of Committee people, which changes our whole focus. We will need a lot more volunteers. The Committee Ron Touchette would like to set up a Blue Ribbon Steering Committee. We have a "road map" through past YMCA's successes to follow. We don't have to guess what to do. The goal is to raise $500,000 in the next three years. It has been a struggle to meet with the people we have targeted. Chad added that this is exciting - it marks a change for us. We have made steps forward. In order to make it successful we need to recruit 180-200 more volunteers in addition to the Blue Ribbon Committee of influential community members. We need to truly make this a community effort where everyone gets involved. "We are definitely moving in the right direction." Ron stated that we are at a stage where things will begin to change rapidly. Two things will be asked of people: to recruit volunteers and contribute money. "We are asking for your time and your money." Bill Helliwell said that a request was brought before the General Board to fundraise in the name of the ER YMCA. We are at the stage where everything we do is important for success or failure. We need the large gifts but also the small gifts. Our next steps are to hire an Executive Director and begin a Capital Campaign. We are all learning the steps we need to take. We can't be chartered until we start fundraising. Robie Wayne will be our financial advisor. Robie is our primary contact. He will stay with us through the process. He will be very much "hands on." Currently, any funds raised would go to Minneapolis. We will eventually set up our own account. Robie has stated that he believes the Founder's campaign will be complete by November. A discussion followed regarding the site of the YMCA. The committee realizes the importance of establishing a site so that we can advertise "site of future YMCA". Naming the YMCA Robie's first suggestion is that we identify ourselves with the community. Naming our future facility is very important. We need an identity. The steering committee decided against Elk River YMCA because it is too limiting. Otsego, Zimmerman et al feel alienated. It is important that it be more inclusive. Elk River YMCA seems to exclude other communities. Three Rivers YMCA and Northstar YMCA were two other suggestions. The committee preferred Northstar YMCA. It identifies a geographical area as opposed to an individual city. It was also noted that if a large donation came in the Y could also include that donor's name. Vote was taken on the naming of the Y the Northstar YMCA. Updates As of today we have 37 kids signed up for Camp Manitou. That is more than all of last summer. Chad Lanners Manitou Summer Fest is scheduled for June21st. There will be hayrides, food, the Raptor Center and more. It is a free event open to the public. On May 20th, Ken Ebel and Jeff Beahen will observe the NYPUM program to gain a better understanding of the program. We are in week 6 and only one participant has dropped out.
