Background/Discussion On June 7, 2010, City Council authorized the advertisement for firefighter candidates to fill three immediate vacancies in the Elk River Fire Department. After a very successful recruitment and application period, the department received 32 applications. All of the applications were carefully reviewed, scored, and ranked. Upon completing a physical agility test, eleven candidates moved forward to the oral interview. A panel of senior Elk River firefighters/officers and one outside representative (Assistant Chief from the Big Lake Fire Department) conducted interviews and brought forward a list of candidates for final consideration by the Fire Chief. Pending Council approval, the department is ready to hire three candidates: Bryan Provo (Elk River) Jason Grosskreutz (Elk River) Mark Lees (Elk River) Conditional offers of employment have been made pending final Council approval. All candidates have completed an extensive background check and pre-employment physical. The fire department will be coming forward at a later date to request the additional hiring of one, and possibly two, new firefighters due to the retirement of Mike Trunnell on November 2, 2010 and the anticipated resignation of a current firefighter due to relocation. The goal is to maintain staffing of the department at forty on-call firefighters. All new firefighters will be required to complete a mandatory probationary/orientation period in accordance with department policies and procedures. To help minimize future costs of recruitment and to provide a quicker mechanism for filling vacancies, the fire department has established an eligible list of qualified candidates. A future date will be scheduled for a formal swearing-in ceremony of the new probationary members.
