MEMORANDUM
iver
Mayor and City Council
FROM: Pat Klaers, City Administrator
DATE: January 6, 1997 ~/~
SUBJECT: Ice Arena Update
The Ice Arena project is on schedule and on budget but both situations are
very tentative at this time. The Ice Arena project is scheduled for completion
and to be open for skating sometime during the week of January 13, 1997.
The final cost figures for the project will not be finalized for a month or so
after the project is completed, but we are far enough along in order to provide
the Council with a preliminary update on the financial status of the project.
Besides the schedule and the financial aspects of the project, there are a
number of other items related to the project that I would like to discuss and
review with the Council on Monday. These items include the official hiring of
City employees to manage the Ice Arena operation (one full time, one full
time seasonal, and 6-8 part time seasonal employees); the high level of
quality services that the City has received from its consultants (RSP
Architecture, Mortenson Construction Management, and I.C.E.); the efforts
of Youth Hockey in Phase I and to implement Phase II of the project (the
completion of the locker rooms); the status of the contingency fund within
the project budget; and what is not in the project
One final update item for the Council is the threat of a work stoppage by the
Carpenter Union's business agent. This is because of the carpenter work that
is being claimed for the bleachers as this work is not scheduled to be
completed by Union employees. The threat of a work stoppage looked very
real as of 12/27/96 for the dasher board work - we got through that problem,
but now the work stoppage is a real concern as it relates to the bleachers.
