Hot Tonic~l of the Month
September mazks the beginning of our fall program offerings and the conclusion of most of
our summer classes. One summer program that is offered into the fall is the Farmers
Market which ran from June 24`'' until September 30`s. The Farmers Market offers a variety
of homegrown produce and is held adjacent to the Westbound Liquor store. In 2008 we
started with 12 vendors, this year we were up to 24 vendors. The response from residents
shopping at the Market has been very positive. The Farmers Market has shown to be a great
collaboration between the Parks and Recreation Department and the Municipal Liquor store
Department.

Department U dates
A council work session was held on September 13'" to discuss the possibility of the Ciry
purchasing the Bailey Point property. The property owner has approached the City to
determine if the Ciry has interest in purchasing the property with the intent of adding a park
to the system. Members of the public had the opportunity to express their opinions of the
proposed purchase. The council will call a closed session later to discuss the price of the
land and other related issues.
A major service that the Recreation Department provides is the use of city fields for youth
athletic associations. Recently there has been an increased demand for use of these fields.
Staff is looking into the need to review our Geld use procedures to be sure that fields are
being appropriately allocated. Staff may be bringing field allocation revisions forward to the
Commission for review in upcoming meetings.

• Senior Center Month went well. One highlight was the Northstar outing with 58 people
on 9.25. We went downtown to the Forum Restaurant for lunch and then shopping
before returning to Elk River.
• New! Annual Women's Health & Fitness event on 10.29
• Elk River Activity Center Named NuStep Pinnacle Award Finalist
• In June, the Activity Center submitted an entry for the 2011 Pitmacle Award. This
awazd recognizes excellence in older adult wellness programs. Pinnacle Award finalists
use creativity to provide programs, environments and services that address the six
dimensions of wellness: physical, social, emotional spirirual, intellectual and vocational.
We aze honored to be selected as a finalist in the Senior Center division. In September
we were visited by the NuStep judging panel.
