5.1. SR 02-18-1997 -(~/ '-k.(.~/ To: iver Date: Police DepartmentSubject: Memorandum ITEM 5.1. Mayor and City Council Thomas D. Zerwas, Chief of Police February 12, 1997 PORTABLE DEFIBRILLATORS Recently, representatives from Physio Control Corp. and Life Link Tech., Inc. presented their products to the police department. Physio Control demonstrated the operation of its LifePak 500 Automated External Defibrillator (AED); and, Life Link Tech. demonstrated its VivaLink AED. Although both AED's appear to be highly competitive in function, options, and price, we are intending to purchase the LifePak 500. The LifePak 500 offers a five (5) year lithium battery, less expensive electrodes (which are compatible with those used by Elk River Ambulance) and a promotional extended warranty of eight (8) years. This unit is very durable and simple to use. The estimated total cost for three (3) complete AED's is $9,500.00 (nine thousand, five hundred dollars). So far, we have received approximately $5,000.00 (five thousand dollars) in donations. Furthermore, Physio Control advised that it will take sixty (60) days to deliver their product to us. We, therefore, anticipate that we will be able to raise most of the remaining $4,500.00 (four thousand, five hundred dollars) during that time. Any amount unfunded would then be paid for from the sale of old police vehicles later this year. Although the decision was difficult and both units are very comparable, I have decided to go with the LifePak 500. This should prove to be the best unit for its intended use.
