Members FROM: Rich Czech, Arena Manager BATE: November 4, 2010 SUBJECT: Agenda Memo -November 4, 2010 Enerey Efficiency Proiects The projects from energy grant projects are completed these projects are, Lighting over both rinks and in the Barn side of the Arena, replacement boilers, and the low emissive ceiling in the Olympic. Banners /Pictures for Arena At the August meeting in 2005, the Arena Commission approved placing banners of Alumni's that have played in the N.H.L. In the motion it does not define a length of time that a player has play in the league. To clarify this, I am asking that Commission to define "playing and or played in the N.H.L". Over the last month Laura and I have been working on putting together some information to give to the paper about the Alumni's pictures for the Arena. When reading the motion of the policy outlining the criteria to have a player's picture hanged at the Arena, I noticed that it doesn't have any length a time a player has play with either the association or the High School or does it indicate weather a college player has to graduate from their respective school. Before moving forward I would like the commission to clarify their position on these two issues. Attached for your review is the page outlining the motion at the 2007 August meeting. Honoring past Volunteers As many of you know Jon McLaughlin past away this summer un-expectantly. There axe many youth hockey people that would like to honor Jon for his time volunteering to youth and high school hockey by placing a shadow box in the Arena along with a plaque with Jon's contribution. The shadow box will consist of his sibling's jerseys, as each one of his siblings move on from hockey, their jersey will be presented to them. Once the last jersey is gone, the shadow box can then be taken down. When approached about honoring Jon with a plaque and shadow box, I thought it was a very good idea. Taking some time to think about it, T feel it should be expanded to all skating programs in Elk River, Youth Hockey, High School Hockey, and Figure Skating. There have been many volunteers over the years that have dedicated their time and talents away from the sheet of the ice to make their respective association and the Arena a stronger part of the community. I would like to call it "behind the glass". Behind the glass reminds me of the many people that may have never touched the ice to coach a skater, however their efforts away from the ice has made their program stronger and more viable for years to come. Pictures in Arena Vice Chair Johnson handed out an excerpt from the August S, 2004 Ice Arena Minutes. The handout briefly acknowledged the discussion regarding the Arena pictures and how they were to be displayed at the arena, and the qualifications that should be met to have said picture displayed in the Arena. Discussion continued as to who would make the frames and the commission agreed that the player or family member should work directly with Mike Jackson regarding the picture and cost of framing, then bring the completed framed picture to Arena Manager, Rich Czech. If in the future Mike Jackson would not be available to make the frames the Arena Commission would have to vote on who would be the replacement. Arena Manager Rich Czech stated that the frames are either a 3 or 4 unit frame, and Vice Chair Johnson stated that if the player has qualified at more than one level of competition, he/she may have more than one picture on display. The Ice Arena Commission agreed that in order to have their picture on display in the ice arena, the individual must have played for Elk River at the youth or high school level and achieved one of the following: 1) College -must have lettered at the varsity level 2) European Professional Hockey 3) National Hockey League (NHL) or affiliated minor league hockey club Vice Chair Johnson stated that the qualifications should include a moral clause Stating a player should have concluded play at the youth and high school level in good standing according to the MAHA rules (youth hockey) or the Minnesota State High School League rules (high school). Commissioner Barth noted that the display of pictures should also include head coaches. He also stated that he would look into the coach's history and the cost associated with placing the pictures in the arena. MOVED BY COMMISSIONER AND SECONDED BY COMMISSIONER BARTH TO PLACE PICTURES IN THE ARENA WITH THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS AND MORAL CLAUSE NOTED AND WITH THE PICTURE AND FRAME SPECIFICATIONS NOTED ABOVE. ADOPT A POLICY REGARDING PLACING BOYS AND GIRLS HEAD COACHE/S AND ANY OTHER COACHES PICTURES IN THE ARENA WITHIN THE AGREED ARENA SPECIFICATIONS AND TO GRANDFATHER IN THE EXSISTING ARENA PICTURES. MOTION CARRIED 5-0 Consideration of the admittance of the Skate Club Pictures will be at another time. 8. Cost Effective Energy Efficient Imnrovements for Minnesota Arena's prepared by the Center of Eneray and Environment /Energy Saving Measures. Along with the Minnesota's Center of Energy handout, a power point presentation was prepared to show some of the Arena's energy saving measures that are in place and some that could be accomplished or refined. Commissioner Farber asked if there was some sort of energy saving grant since the City of Elk River is an Energy Star City. Ice Arena manager Rich Czech stated that he would look into the ceiling tiles that were presented in the energy saving information. 9. Ice Sales A handout was presented that showed the Ice Arena usage by customer. Total hours from Tune 06 through May 07 were 4,174.17. Total hours projected from June 07 through May 08 are 3,914.42. I I. Remodeling of the Entrvwav and Lobby A computer generated picture and floor plan was handed out that showed the Arena in a possible post remodel stage. Discussion followed by Commissioner Farber asking if there could be a joint venture with the Elk River School Board. Commissioner Barth stated that he feels the Board is open to discussion regarding aArena/field house and that he would like to facilitate a meeting with the School Board, City of Elk River, City Council, Youth Hockey Representative, Skate Club Representative, and Arena Manager Rich Czech. Chair Martin and Commissioner Farber both stated that they would like to be involved also in the meeting.
