Rolfe, Chief of Police ITEM DESCRIPTION REVIEWED BY Authorization to Promote Ron Nierenhausen to Patrol Captain Lauren Wi er, HR Re resentative REVIEWED BY Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator Action Requested Promote Patrol Sergeant Ron Nierenhausen to the position of Patrol Captain effective January 11, 2011 at pay grade 13 step E. Background/Discussion The position of Patrol Captain has been vacant since the appointment of Brad Rolfe to Chief of Police on December 6, 2010. The Patrol Captain is responsible for supervision of the Police Department Patrol Division consisting of four sergeants and seventeen patrol officers. Per the Police Department job description and qualifications for the position, Sergeant Nierenhausen is the only qualified supervisor for the position. He is exceptionally qualified for the position. Ron Nierenhausen is a twenty-two year veteran of the Elk River Police Department. He was hired as a Police Officer in 1988 and was promoted to Sergeant on January 1, 1996. During his career he has served on numerous specialized units and has had many additional responsibilities including: ^ Founder and original member of the K-9 Unit ^ Original member and current team leader of the SWAT team ^ Current Field Training Unit Supervisor ^ Bike Team Supervisor ^ Department Firearms Instructor ^ Honor Guard member ^ Former Police Reserve Unit Coordinator ^ YMCA Board Member ^ City Employee Recognition Committee member Sergeant Nierenhausen is a US Army Reserve veteran. He holds a BA degree from St. Cloud State University, an MA from Concordia University and is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. He has received numerous departmental awards and commendations. Financial Impact The position is currently budgeted. Recommended pay grade 13 step E, which is the rate of the previous Patrol Captain.
