SUBJECT: Rain Garden at Orono Park
Background
Parks and Recreation staff has been collaborating with staff of the Sherburne Soil and Water
Conservation District to develop a rain garden project at Orono Park. This type of
innovative storm water management will be an important pan of improving water quality in
the watershed of the Elk River.
Summary
14.7 acres of land drain into Lake Orono through Orono Park. The runoff from the
impervious surface carries automobile byproducts, goose droppings and sediment.
Constructing a rain garden and a filter strip will treat the runoff froml3.8 acres. Additional
measures will be studied to treat the remaining area.
The total cost of this project is $16,262. The Sherburne Soil and Water conservation district
will pay $12,197 (75%). The city of Elk River's share would be $4,066 (25%). The City of
Elk River can substitute in-kind labor worth $2,969, leaving a balance of $1,097.
Staff has reviewed the approved master plan and this project does not conflict with the
improvements scheduled for 2009.
Action Requested
Recommend approval of the agreement with the Sherburne Soil and Water Conservation
District to construct a demonstration rain garden and filter strip at Orono Park.
