Project Number:
Project Name: Great Northern Trail
Contact: Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director, City of Elk River
Project Cost: $400,000 (Engineering, Construction, Contingency)
Request: $200,000
Description: Pave the abandoned rail bed from County Road 33 north to the Elk River city
limits. Includes a pedestrian tunnel below grade at CR 33. First phase was
completed in 1997.
Features: Completion of this 2.65-mile trail segment would create a 5.5-mile trail from the
City limits on the north to historic downtown Elk River. In conjunction with the
trail, development of Sherburne County this trail has the potential to become a
regional trail between Princeton and Elk River. Good and high quality woodland
communities surround much of the proposed route.
