SUBJECT: 2005 Park Project Update
• Basketball and Tennis Courts at Troutbrook, Kliever Point Park, West Oaks and
Highlands West have been paved. The low bid contractor for the color coating of
the courts has indicated that due to the rainy start of summer they are behind
schedule and will need a perfect September to finish all their projects in 2005.
The surfacing material is not warranteed if applied after October 1. Tennis court
fencing and basketball poles will be installed yet this year.
• New pazk benches and tables are back ordered, however the concrete pads will be
installed in September and installation of benches can take place as soon as they
arrive.
• The new soccer/ football field at the Youth Athletic Complex has been seeded,
and is growing quite nicely. Some erosion has occurred along on of the berms and
staff is in the process of making repairs.
• Playgrounds are installed at Kliever Point Park, Windsor Park and West Oaks.
• Shelters are installed at Lions Pazk, Windsor Park, YAC, Troutbrook Pazk, and
West Oaks.
• Trails are complete at Lions Park, Highlands West, Highlands East, Windsor
Park, West Oaks Park and Kliever Point Park.
• The prairie restoration at Highlands East received a grant from the DNR but will
not be funded unti12006.
• Interpretive sign design for Woodland Trails Park is under way and staff will
provide information regarding this project at the meeting on September 14.
• Trees have been planted in West Oaks, Kliever Point Park and Troutbrook Park.
Additional trees will be planted in Highlands West Park this year.

Hot Topic(s) of the Month
8-2-OS National Night Out, first time that the center participated. We had a total
Of 114 older adults attend. 64 were from the GA campus and 50 people
Attended from the community.
8-4-OS City Rec kids at Senior Center, played Bingo with seniors and had root beer
floats. Everyone enjoyed the activity. The Senior Center and City Rec.
donated prizes. Everyone seemed to like them.
8-18-OS Stillwater Cruise and Vineyard Outing. The bus was shared with Monticello.

8-30-OS Newcomers Coffee Hour, 23 people were invited (IS from the community
And 8 GA tenants). These are all new people that we have never had contact
with before.
9-1-OS Sue is escorting the State Fair Bus trip. 52 people on bus
We are still taking registrations for SALT (Seniors & Law Enforcement Together)
Councils Senior Safety Day on 9-14-05. This year it is going to be held in Becker.

The Sherburne County Senior Advocate is now visiting the Senior Center every other Friday from 9-
3:30. She and her volunteers can help older adults with questions on Home Health Care, Cost of
Medications, Medicare issues, medical supplements, transportation and Long Term Care Ins. etc. She is
hoping to be able to get more business by being located were the seniors are. Because of our lack of
office space she meets in the activity area or Lion's Den, whatever is available.
In Sept. we have bus tours planned to Duluth, which includes taking a train ride from Two Harbors and
having lunch at the Grand Superior Lodge. This is the first time we have offered this trip with a train
ride. It sold out at once and we have added a second bus on a different day. We are also offering a
shopping trip to St Cloud using RiverRider and a 3-day gambling tour to Meskwaki.
Moonlight Cards & Games is starting up again. The Bank of Elk River sponsors this program.
The computer club is meeting again after having the summer off.

An Over 90's Tea Party /Open House will be held on 9-22 for Elk River's oldest citizens who are over
90 years of age. All of the "guests of honor" are living independently in their own homes.
I tried to get a "Low Impact Aerobics" class or a stretching or Yoga class started at the Emporium but
the instructor that works for City Rec could not fit it in her schedule. Hopefully by January she will be
able to. Otherwise maybe Michelle could give me another name or two to call. Community Education
is offering a "Jazzercise Lite" class here at the center in Sept and Oct.
