National Fire Conference Attendence
As part of my 1997 Fire Department budget under travel, conference and
schools, is the opportunity to attend a National Fire Department Conference.
The 1997 International Association of Fire Chiefs Conference is to be held in
Dallas, Texas, August 22 through August 27th 1997. I have reviewed the
conference schedule of workshops and general sessions and have found
numerous workshops to be of specific interest, not only as Fire Chief for the
City of Elk River, but also as a member of the City of Elk River's Safety
Committee. One of the workshops scheduled during the conference relates to
violence in the workplace; Recognizing the Warning Signs. This is a topic of
discussion at our monthly Safety Committee meetings. Workplace violence
even effects employees who are in the public safety service. This workshop
will provide the opportunity to learn and identify the early warning signs
and prevent violence in our workplace.
Other workshops scheduled throughout the week relate not only to volunteer
Fire Departments but also preparing all departments for the 21st Century
and the challenges that face both volunteer and combination Fire
Departments. Some of the workshops include: Fireground Safety, Keeping
the Volunteer Fire Department Volunteer, Performance Improvement
Process for the Volunteer Firefighter and a variety of other workshops.
I am including the breakdown of the approximate costs for my attending the
1997 Fire/Rescue International Conference in Dallas, Texas.
Airfare $ 250.00
Hotel 642.00
Registration 375.00
Meals 240.00
Total $1,507.00

The opportunity to attend the International Association of Fire Chiefs
Annual Conference will provide myself with educational workshops,
networking opportunities with Fire Chief's throughout the nation and the
opportunity to attend the trade show to discuss issues, concerns, and ideas I
may have about the equipment we use, face to face with the product
specialists who design and build it. There will be vendors and manufacturers
attending the International Conference from businesses located throughout
the United States.
If you have any questions in reference to this issue, please feel free to call me
at the Elk River Fire Department, 441-4919.
