Hot Topic(s) of the Month
The winter season at Woodland Trails Park has been very busy with the cold weather only
hampering use occasionally. Trail conditions have been good to excellent for most of the
season with only a one day trail closure due to warm weather and rain. As of February 3`s
there have been 71 skiable days of the season.
Weekend trail use has been fairly evenly split between recreations skiers, serious skiers, and
walking and snowshoe enthusiasts. There are 16km of ski trails, 9 of which are groomed
with both classic tracks and a skate lane. Walking is not allowed on the ski trails, but there
axe 5km of designated groomed winter walking and snow shoeing trail which has been very
popular again this year.
The trails are maintained by community volunteers.

Depardnent Updates
City Staff are currently working on securing a Solaz Energy Legacy Grant through the
Depaztment of Natural Resources. This grant would provide funding to install solar lights in
the tunnel which runs under County Road 33 along the Great Northern Trail. If awarded
the installation of the solar lights would occur in the summer of 2011.
The Parks and Recreation Director position opening has been posted. The deadline for
applications is February 18`b. Review of applications will begin at that time and the position
will be open until filled.

Department Updates -Grant Updates
City staff axe currently working on two giant projects that would have positive impacts on
the Parks and Recreational services to the community.
One of these projects im~olves Hillside City Paxk. This giant would secure funds to aid in
the installation of drinking water at the Parks parking lot which would aid both general park
users as well as races held at the Park. Also, the giant would provide funds for additional
supply storage to support the volunteer group that maintains the Paxk.
The other project involves the Youth Athletic Complex. This grant would secure funds to
install lights on four of the fields in the Complex. The lights would increase play time at the
Complex, especially in the spring and fall seasons. This would also aid in alleviating the
demand for field space from the various groups that utilize City athletic fields.
