ACTION REQUESTED
The Police Department is requesting Council authorization to advertise for the position of
Secretary/Receptionist, which will be vacant May 31, 2011.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
'The Police Department currently employs two staff members in this capacity. They share the duties of
receptionist and transcriptionist. They are responsible for many essential duties such as: greeting visitors,
answering phones, taking initial reports, monitoring communications systems, and administering and
tracking several department programs. They are also responsible for the majority of the typing duties,
which includes officer reports and transcribing statements.
We have received written notification that Karen Vernon, who currently holds one of these positions, will
retire effective May 31, 2011. Karen, who has served the City for over 14 years, will be greatly missed for
exceptional typing skills, positive attitude, and attention to detail.
The Police Department seeks authorization to advertise and receive applications to facilitate replacement
of this position. We are entering into the busiest time of year for the department and would like to be able
to replace Karen with little or no delay.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
There is no expected financial impact on the City. This position has been budgeted for in 2011 at Pay
Grade 3, Step E. It is expected that the replacement employee would start at Pay Grade 3, but at a lesser
step, thus allowing the City to realize a savings.
