SUBJECT: 2010 Census Data
The 2010 Census data has been released. Basic population and household information is
attached. If you wish to view more detailed information you can visit American Factfinder:

The Census is completed every 10 years. Elk River's population in 2000 was 16,447. For
2010 the population was 22,974.
Based on population, Elk River is the 43rd largest city with 854 cities in the State.
Our current state highway population sign says our population is at 23,187. This figure was
based off estimates from the state demographer's office. The demographer's numbers are
only estimates and don't necessarily mean that Elk River's population declined as other
factors could be involved. A new sign will be installed sometime this summer.

SUBJECT: February and Year-to-Date Response Information
Below is a summary of the activity for the Elk River Fire Department for the month of
February and year-to-date statistics (as of February, 28, 2011).
February, 2011 Summary
In the month of February, 2011, the Elk River Fire Department responded to 44 calls for
service.

Rescues (including vehicle accidents) ......................................................... 15 (34%)
Hazardous Conditions (gas leaks, electrical problems, etc.) ................... 2 (5%)
Service Calls (water leaks, unauthorized burning, etc.) ............................ 2 (5%)
Good Intent Calls (canceled en-route, HazMat investigation, etc.) ...... 13 (30%)
False Alarm and False Calls ......................................................................... 10 (23%)
The average response time to calls for the month of January was 6 minutes 24 seconds.
Year-to-Date Summary
Year-to-date, the Elk River Fire Department has responded to 93 calls for service.

The average response time to calls year-to-date is 6 minutes.
Year-to-Date Comparison
Through February 28 of last year, the Elk River Fire Department responded to 60 calls for
service (compared to 93 this year). This is a 55% increase in call volume.
Year-to-Date Analysis
The Elk River Fire Department continues to see an increase in the number of calls for
service. The beginning of 2011 has been extremely busy. Despite the increase in call volume,
on-call firefighters continue to stand ready to serve and protect the community. While it is
difficult to forecast year-end personnel costs this eaxly, staff will continue to monitor call
volume and its potential impact on year-end financials.
Other Updates
• The Department has taken delivery of its new heavy rescue truck. Work is presently
underway to mount hardware and equipment. The truck is expected to be put into
full service within the next few weeks. A public open house and "wet down"
ceremony will be scheduled at a later date when the truck is fully outfitted and in-
service.
• There have been no reports of flooding at this time. The colder weather, specifically
below freezing nights, has slowed the spring melt. Over 3,200 sandbags have been
distributed to Elk River residents and businesses.

SUBJECT: Cable Intern
The Cable Division is working toward bringing in a cable intern, through Hennepin
Technical College, for about 100 hours of work. This person would assist Jake with some
event taping, programming, live meeting taping, and editing. This would be a non-paid
position. Please let staff know if there are any issues.
