• AARP Tax Help has started 3 x per week. So far 428 people have had their taxes done
at the Activity Center this year.
Pinewood Promotion: Pinewood Party at the Activity Center on March 23. Wii
games, Hot dogs and Pinewood staff to talk about the new season. 22 people came to
participate. The weather was bad and schools were closed.
C.A.E.R. Fundraiser at the Senior Center on 3.29. The Elk River Lions hosted a
pancake dinner and the Senior Center provided prizes for "Friendship" Bingo. All
proceeds go to C.A.E.R. # 104 in attendance. The Senior Center and Activity Centers
participants donated a total of $1,360.00 and 375 pounds of food. There was a new
twist on the fundraiser this year. One of the Activity Center's volunteer leaders asked
the Smear card group to make a donation to CAER. From there began a friendly
competition between different groups at the Activity Center, who could raise the most
cash donations. Staff developed a chart to track the progress. When one group's
column on the chart increased, other groups responded with more donations.

Hot ToQic(g) of the Month
Staff conducted two group interviews in March for summer recreation positions. To be
considered for a position, interviewees must attend one of the two scheduled group
interviews. Prospective recruits are told to dress in tennis shoes and comfortable clothing
because they will be asked to do a variety of active tasks and will be asked to speak in front
of a small group of people. Activities are planned for team building and get to know you
exercise's along with a crafr type project that would show who is a leader in a group and
what type.
During the group interviews we look for who has interacted with different types of people,
how they interacted in front of the group of people and if they are team players. Get to
know you questions are asked during group time or on the side when there are small
conversations going on.
The atmosphere is kept low key and fun, which helps keep the candidates comfortable. We
have found that all age groups of candidates do well in this setting, if they are willing to
"play" in an interview, they will be willing to "play" for work whether it be with small
children in sports or summer camp.

Department Updates
Staff have completed and submitted an Outdoor Recreation Grant through the Deparanent
of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Trails. If awarded this grant will secure funds to
aid in the installation of lights on the four upper fields at the Youth Athletic Complex.
Notification on this grant award is expected in late summer.
The City has entered into an agreement to purchase parking lots in historic downtown. The
lots include space behind Daddyo's as well as a section of the lower lot next to Rivers Edge
Commons Park. The purchase of these lots will greatly support the Riverfront Concert
Series as well as provide opportunities for other events.
Staff have completed and submitted several grant applications in an effort to secure funding
to aid in the purchasing on the Bailey Point property. The City is working in conjunction
with the Minnesota Land Trust as well as applying for State funds through the Department
of Natural Resources. Notification on these grant awards is expected in late summer.
Interviews for the Parks and Recreation Director position have begun. 115 applications
were received for the position opening. The Commission will be continually updated
throughout the hiring process.
