SUBJECT: Fleet Committee Update
At the request of Mayor Dietz, the Fleet Committee will be presenting an update to the
Council on Monday evening. A brief overview of the history, efforts, and accomplishments
of our Fleet Committee, as well as some highlights of ongoing work will be presented. Also
shown will be the City of Elk River life cycle replacement schedule with comparisons to
other cities in our area. The Committee recognizes that every city must work within their
individual budgets, what works for one city may be far different from what works for
another city. We look forward to meeting with the Council.

Budget-Saving Ideas
1) Extend the life of the entire fleet. The City has an excellent fleet
maintenance program and our mechanics do costly maintenance
procedures to keep our vehicles in top shape.
10% Life Increase
Squad cars 36 months to 40 months
Pick ups 10 years to 11 years
Dump Trucks 15 years to 17 years
20% Life Increase
Squad cars 36 months to 44 months
Pick ups 10 years to 12 years
Dump Trucks 15 years to 18 years
2) Keep squad cars in city fleet as B & E cars, Administration
vehicles, investigator's .cars or police reserve cars. Sell squads
short and fully equipped to other small cities.
3) Conserve fuel citywide with a "no idling policy."
4) Put building inspectors in 40 mph compact cars or small
pickups.
