Camp Manitou Event - 8/14/04 NORTHSTAR YMCA COMMUNITY BOARD MINUTES FOR MEETING OF MARCH 11, 2004 MEMBERS ATTENDING: Pat Klaers, Ed Stoutenburg, Bill Helliwell, Ron Touchette, Tom McKinney, Nick Haidos, Ken Ebel, Michele Bergh, Connie Gandrud, Mary Eberley -NEW MEMBERS: Arthur Jackett & Ruth Crowe -Volunteer Coordinator Chair Helliwell called meeting to order at 7:05 AM. Agenda with Date Correction & Minutes for meeting of February 5, 2004 were approved. COMMITTEE REPORTS: 1) Pro~am Comrnittee -Ken Ebe] reported convnittee meeting attendance has been good. Two smdenC members are also attending. NYPUM (National Youth Program Using Mini-Bikes) will continue at Camp Manitou this summer. Some federal finding available thm collaborative mental health program. Cann Manitou -hope for 150 kids to register, there will be new amphitheater & new restroom facilities. At least part of the program will likely be done in conjunction with Boys & Girls Club. Also plan for more Senior Activity events this summer and perhaps another NW Y outing. Youth in Goveranient is finally established_ teacher coordinator is Kathy Culligan - 4 shidents participated. Thattks to Connie Gandrvd for spreading the word and making this happen. Will be info in the Ells River Star News, and hope to make presentation to the School Board to help promote and make the program more public. There is potential for "Kids & Cops" nro2ram this spring. Police department is very interested. Welcome [o Arthur Jackett as a representative of senior community and to Ruth Crowe who is new Volunteer Coordinator. Michele Bergh reported that there will be Senior Exoo on May 14"', Summer Family Event will be held again, and wiil be an E~g Hunt as Easter Family Event. Y will be present and can be featured at Tom McKinney presented copy of the new Camp Catalog which will soon be out to the schools for dishibution. Tom also noted thaC discussions with Boys & Girls Club for possible joint projects are nearing agreement. Two remaining concerns -transportation issue and membership requirements for Boys & Girls Club if it is to be a drop-off site for Camp - do not appear to be obstacles. Transportation is solved, thanks to St Louis Park Transportation, and the membership requirement shouldn't be a problem. Tom is confident. 2) Public Relations Committee - Ed Stoutenberg reported that Expo Booth has been secured. Will need volunteers. Will be a popcorn machine. Will also be securing a booth for the Sherburne Co. Fair this sunnier. Tom M. noted the importance of coordination, getting enough volunteer help to be successful. He will have t-shirts and brochures available for Expo. 3) Finance & Y-Partners Corrunittee: -Ron Touchette reported the comnuttee met and established goals and objectives, is in the process of gathering contact list for Y-Parhrers Campaign (will be derived from al] people who have had contact with this NorthStar Y project so far). Committee is beginning to build some relationships that will be important to long-term campaigns and capital fund campaign. Ron discussed the need for administrative support for these campaigns, phone calls, meeting minutes, etc, Conunittee wants to develop power-point presentation to use for meetings & group presentations. The sample Y-Partners Campaign mailing was presented. Mailing list should be ready week of March 15°i and mailings will begin the end of the month. A follow-up phone call to mail recipients is planned. Tom McKinney does have a power point presentation, which can be adapted for NorthStar Y and will get it to comnvttee for review. 4) Executive Conn~ittee Report - first meeting was held with new membership as determined last month. First major task is to collect and consolidate goals and objectives for the organization. Each committee has been asked to provide. Tom M. distributed what he has collected so far. A few changes will likely be made before final adoption. My name is Bill Helliwell and I have the wonderful opportunity to be the Chair of the NorthStar YMCA Community Board. On behalf of the board, I am writing to you, our past supporters, volunteers, and participants to update you on past events and accomplishments of the last year. Enclosed is an update of our progress in bringing the YMCA to the Elk River Area and surrounding communities. As you are probably aware the YMCA is more than a facility; it is about building a strong community. Last year, many of you receiving this update helped us and that has been greatly appreciated. We plan to continue to bring many program opportunities in the coming year, while developing and implementing a plan to build a facility. You are all important in this effort. Please let me know if you would be interested in participating in any of our endeavors. Thank you for your participation so far and we look forward to your continued support. Sincerely, Bill Helliwell Chairperson NorthStar YMCA Community Board (763)441-9811 YMCA Elk River Area Building on Possibilities In July of 2000, the City of Elk River and the YMCA began discussing the dream of the YMCA being part of the community. This idea evolved through community pressures to develop a local Community Center. The City of Elk River and the YMCA partnered in a market study, which was completed and presented at a meeting at the Boys and Girls Club in May 2001. The study demonstrated most residents have a strong positive image of the YMCA. They view a YMCA as a place for families to go that offers a safe environment, adult fitness programs and a variety of programming for everyone. To highlight a few of our accomplishments; •:• Relationships with community leaders in Elk River and surrounding communities have been established. Boards and Committees have been developed to create and implement a YivICA in Ells River. •:• Developed and implemented programs to meet the needs of youth and families. In 2002 and 2003, over 200 youth participated in YMCA Camp Manitou. Young people were bused from Elk River to Camp Manitou in Monticello, Minnesota daily throughout the summer. The youth participated in archery, golfing, water sports, canoeing, field and track games, team building activities, arts and crafts, fishing, etc. Hundreds of additional youth were served in YMCA Summer Power and special programs. :• Established funding to serve youth and families through the Sherburne County Family Service Collaborative. Programming is dedicated to serve at-risk youth and their families by providing young people participation in our National Program Using Minibikes and a Family Camp designed to bring families together and reduce out of home placement. Established community presence through special events and programs that included; informational gatherings with community members, Sherburne County Fair information booth, seniors tours, family events, Elk River Business Expo, Earth Day, Day Camp Manitou and Summer Power. s• Explored potential land and building sites for locating a YMCA facility. The City of Elk River is currently offering two potential sites for development. :• Partnered with City Parks and Recreation Department to serve SSO families at two community family events •:• Collaborations and partnerships have been developed with the City of Elk River which include the Police Department, Senior Center, and the Parks and Recreation Department. Other partners collaborations include the Boys and Girls Club, Sherburne County Social and Family Services, Sherburne County Sheriffs Department, and NRG. The YMCA mission and focus is building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. We bring over 150 years of experience, dedication and service to communities. More than 2,400 YMCA's serve more than 17.5 million members in the United States. Each YMCA is volunteer founded, volunteer led and volunteer based.
