Authorization to Solicit Funds for Fire Prevention Activities
REVIEWED BY
ACTION REQUESTED
Approval for the fire department to proceed with soliciting funds for fire prevention material for 2011.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Annually, the Elk River Fire Department, with marketing and fundraising assistance provided by the
National Fire Safety Council, reaches out to local businesses to help support the department's fire
prevention activities. Through these efforts, the department is able to purchase educational material
(coloring books, literature, handouts, and posters). This material is later distributed to our local schools
and utilized in-house during the three month fire prevention educational efforts, led by Fire Prevention
Specialist Jeff Smith.
The fundraising effort is led by a representative of the National Fire Safety Council on behalf of the Elk
River Fire Department. The goal is to raise $10,000 that will be utilized to purchase educational material.
Letters will be sent to local businesses asking for their support in this effort. It has been a successful
program in past years that the fire department would like to continue, and hopefully, expand to include
material for our senior citizens. In addition to the mailings, information will be posted on the fire
department's webpage and Facebook accounts directing businesses on how they can contribute.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The collaboration and marketing efforts of the Elk River Fire Department and the National Fire Safety
Council has enabled the Fire Department to provide educational material at little to no cost to the
department's annual operating budget.

Dear Concerned Business Leader:
The Elk River Fire Department has initiated this years Fire Safety Education Program for
the children and families of our community; however, we need your help.
In cooperation with the Elk River Area Schools, we .will be providing fire safety education
materials for our children. These materials have been designed exclusively by The
National Fire Safety Council, a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization. This vital
program will assist in teaching children fire safety and burn prevention. We strongly
believe that by making children and families aware of fire safety, we can prevent tragic fire
losses and deaths.
Elk River firefighters are confident that fires and fire losses can be prevented if children
and their parents can be properly educated on fire safety. Won't you join us in our
objective? In order to help cover the cost of these materials, our department is turning to
concerned businesses, industries, and professional leaders such as yourself.
We are asking you to help provide fire safety materials and services for 30 or more
children at $2.00 per child. Examples are as follows:
30 children @ $60.00 50 children @ $100.00
40 children @ $80.00 100 children @ $200.00 -etc.
As an acknowledgement of those who support this program we will be listing them on the
prestige page of all activity manuals under the heading:
"PROVIDED AS A PUBLIC SERVICE BY PEOPLE WHO CARE"
Thank you in advance for your concerned support. Your help is greatly appreciated and
will surely reflect through the children of our community.
Sincerely, ,
John Cunningham

It is our sworn duty to provide the Elk River community with the level of fire protection
