SUBJECT: Ice Arena Update
At the August 3 Ice Arena Commission meeting we reviewed the financial support that the
user groups of the Arena were willing to commit towards an Arena renovation. The Figure
Skating Club gave the Commission a written statement that stated that they were willing to
commit $5,000.00 a year for the next 20 years. Even though Commission members and staff
have met with other user groups, we do not have any other written financial commitments at
this time.. However, both the Elk River Girl's Booster Club and Elk River Youth Hockey
are in support of the project but were not prepared to commit to any long-term financial
assistance at this time.
I met with the School District's Finance Officer Randy Anderson and he stated that he does
not see any funding for the project in the near future being available. He indicated that in the
next few years there will be expansions throughout the district that will need to be fulfilled,
as well as building repairs and other projects that are a high priority. He did indicate that
ultimately it's the School Board's decision on whether they would like to participate in
funding of the Arena renovation.
Ice Arena Commission Chair Dale Martin has been in contact with the Boy's Booster Club
but has not been able to get a response from them regarding their position on the project.
This spring I emailed about 40 Arena Managers to research if they had financial partnerships
with their user groups for building, renovating, or operating of their Arenas. Attached for
your review are the responses that I received. I asked for as much detailed information as
possible; however, some of the specifics may not be included in the information.
Dale Martin and I will be present at the Council Meeting to discuss the renovation project in
detail and to answer any questions that the Council may have.
Staff is looking for Council direction on how to proceed
