ACTION REQUESTED
The Elk River Fire Department is seeking approval to hire two firefighters to fill immediate vacancies.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Currently, the Elk River Fire Department has 38 on-call firefighters and is seeking approval to hire two
additional employees to bring the roster to the Department's authorized staffing level of forty.
Using the existing eligibility list from the 2010 recruitment period, the Department interviewed a number
of interested applicants and a tentative offer was given to Steven Bourdeaux and J. Christopher Sisk,
pending a background check, pre-employment physical, and Council approval. Both applicants have
successfully completed the appropriate background checks and pre-employment physical and I am
recommending both to be hired as probationary firefighters.
Steve and Chris will be required to complete a mandatory probationary/orientation period in accordance
with department policies and procedures. Both will be assigned to Station #2 on Orono Parkway.
A future date will be scheduled for a formal swearing-in ceremony of the new probationary members.
It is my intent to expire the current eligibility list at the conclusion of this fiscal year.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The City will be responsible fox paying for training expenses including Firefighter I and First Responder.
The Fire Department is waiting for a final dollar amount for the latest round of training funds available
through the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education which may offset some of the cost.
