Summer recreation programs are coming to a close. Overall the Recreation Division offered
the Elk River community a wide variety of quality activities that served participants of all age
levels. Staff now transition to fall programmuig as well as planning fox upcoming winter
activities.
The Fall Flag Football program is very popular. This fall the program quickly reached its
capacity and developed a large waiting list. Staff looked at the issue and ended up created a
second class to be held immediately after the first. The new class maxed out with an
enrollment of 60 participants. Parents were very pleased with the staffs efforts to add the
new class.

Department Updates
Michael Hecker has been hired as the new Parks and Recreation Director. Michael has over
21 years of experience in municipal government and nonprofit organizations. Fox the past
eleven years, Michael has been the Parks and Recreation Director fox the City of Mason in
Ohio. Prior to the City of Mason, Michael was the Parks, Culture and Recreation Director
fox the City of Unalaska in Alaska for four and a half years and Executive Director fox the
Old Greenwich Riverside Community Centex fox seven years. Michael holds a degree in
Operations and Systems Analysis with a minor in Accounting/Economics and a master's
degree in Recreation Administration.
The Recreation Division is in the process of moving offices from Lions Paxk Center to City
Hall. Details axe cuxxentiy being worked on to assure the best possible customer service to
the community. The timeline on the office move is to have it completed by the end of
September or early October. Staff is also focusing on marketing efforts to educate the
public on the office relocation.
