Heater Units for Ice Arena Zamboni and
Compressor Rooms
This item is not formally listed on the agenda, but I would like to have it
added for Council consideration as Item 4.6. under Administration.
Attached is a memo from Building Official Cliff Skogstad and Ice Arena
Manager Rich Czech regarding the need to replace the heating units in the
Zamboni and Compressor rooms. The recommendation is to go with the
$4,500 quote from B&D Plumbing for a slightly different heating system. In
this manner we hope to avoid a similar problem in the future.
The city will be submitting this request to our insurance company and our
chances of getting any financial reimbursement for this request is unknown.
This item can be financed within the ice arena budget as a building and/or
equipment repair and maintenance line item, or at the end of the year as we
evaluate the total Ice Arena expenditures, this expense can possibly be
shifted to the city self insurance fund.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council approve the B&D Plumbing quote
for heating units in the amount of $4,500.

Subject: Heaters Units for Zamboni and Compressor rooms
Last spring (1997) there was a refrigeration leak on the ice skid to the Olympic rink. Since
the heater units in the compressor room and in the Zamboni room are not sealed units, the
refrigeration turned into a caustic acid when it was burned in the heater units. This
damaged the heat exchangers in the heater units to the point where the units no longer
function properly and are in need of replacement.
We have received a verbal quote from Horwitz of $4,500 to replace the heaters with the
same kind of heater units. We also received a quote of $4,500 from B and D Plumbing and
Heating (see attachment A) that are sealed units. The sealed units use outside air in the
heat exchangers, thus avoiding any chance of the units being damaged by any future
refrigeration leak that might occur. We feel that the quote from B and D is a very
reasonable quote, and recommend that we purchase these units from B and D.
Please call us with any questions or concerns that you may have regarding the heating
units.
