4.4. SR 06-01-1998fity of ver Item #4.4. MEMORANDUM TO: FROM: DATE: Mayor & City Counci~ ~tneKll~ri~8City Ad~ator SUBJECT: City Planner Selection Process Applications for the City Planner position are due by 4:30, Wednesday, June 3. An ad to this effect was in the May 17 and May 24 Star Tribune Sunday papers and in the May 20 and May 27 Elk River Star News. A timeframe for the selection of a city planner looks something like the following: June 4 - 8 June 9 June 9-10 June 11-12 June 15-17 June 18-19 Review and rank apphcants Determine apphcants to be interviewed Contact apphcants and set up interviews Send out interview and rejection letters Interview 4-6 applicants Select top two apphcants and invite to the special City Council meeting on June 29, 1998 If we really pushed the process we could conceivably get the top two apphcants to the Council on June 22, however, the June 22, City Council meeting has been canceled. Accordingly, it may be appropriate to have a special City Council meeting on June 23, but by having Council interviews on the fifth Monday of the month (June 29), it gives us a httle more flexibility in the above schedule which is admittedly tight. Once the final two apphcants are selected we hope to be able to take them on a tour of the city before interviews with the City Council so that they will have a better understanding of what Elk River is all about. It is assumed that the City Council will want at least one Councilmember involved in the interview process. Staff review of the apphcations will be conducted mainly by Lori and myself and we will be the two staff members that participate in the interviews. If the Council decides to add more than one Council representative to the interview team or a Planning Commission member to the interview team, then I suggest that we add Terry Maurer to 13065 Orono Parkway · P.O. Box 490 · Elk River, MN 55330 · TDD & Phone: (612) 441-7420 · Fax: (612) 441-7425 sit in so that there is an "odd" number involved in the process. Councilmembers are more than welcome to review the applications, but you should note that the information in the applications of the applicants which are not selected for interviews is confidential and cannot be relayed on to the public. If the Council is not interested, staff feels more than comfortable weaving through resumes and determining the most qualified applicants based on the ranking criteria established. The ranking criteria will include such issues as education, recent relevant experience, and professional background. \\elkriver \sys\shr doc\council\cplnrpcs .doc
