Award Winners of the 2012 Independence Day Photo Contest
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Earlier this summer the Star News, Sandhill photography Club,Elk River Independence Day Committee
and the Economic Development Department collaborated to hold the 2012 Powered by Nature photo
contest. The project highlights the community's passion for the Powered by Nature brand.
The contest and background about the community brand was extensively covered by the Star News. Jim
Boyle, editor of the Star News plans to attend the EDA meeting to provide additional information and to
present awards to the winners of the contest.
Contest winners have been invited to the EDA meeting to be recognized. Winners will receive a framed
copy of their photograph and Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce Bucks.
The 2012 winners are as follows:
• First Place—Denise Lanthier
• Second Place—Wayne Matteson
• Third Place—Jennifer Wagner
The Sandhill Photography Club plans to hold the contest annually.

Denise Lanthier has won the Powered by Nature Photography Contest,
which was held in conjunction with the Elk River Independence Day
celebration on Wednesday.

Jay Grammond, who leads the local Sandhill Photography Club, says
Lanthier was an easy choice.
"The winning picture scored well in all four of the criteria," he said. "We
also felt it had the most 'wow' factor."
Judges' comments included: "We like the fog, sky colors, the field .
Composition, technical and originality are right on."
The judges spent more than an hour of their time going over the
submissions for the contest.
Wayne Matteson took second for one of two shots taken at the
Sherburne County Fair, a gathering place in July where people of all
ages come together to be energized by a great time.

"This year's contest was a last-minute idea, but we were happy with the
results," said Jim Boyle, the chair of the Elk River Independence Day I'ultiff n I'tt�ls

Night to Unite brings together 38 parties
The top 10 photos for this year's contest were on display at Elk River's Bachmann and Ventura have a following
Fourth of July celebration at Lions Park. The three winning entries were as eclectic politicians
