SUBJECT: Length of Service
At the July 18, 2012, Fire Service Task Force Meeting, the topic of retention was discussed,
specifically pertaining to retaining long-term firefighters. Attached is a list of the length of
service of current Elk River firefighters. In summary:
• 26%of the department is completely vested with 20+ years of service.
• 55% of the department has 10+ years of service.
• 79% of the department has 5+ years of service
The current staffing level of the fire depaznnent, excluding the fire chief,is 38 firefighters.
Contribution to a firefighter's pension begins on their hire date (currently$5,091 annually).
They are partially vested (40%) after 5 years of service. They are fully vested after 20 years
of service.
