Summer recreation programs are coming to a close. Overall the Recreation Division offered
the Elk River community a wide variety of quality activities that served participants of all age
levels. Staff now transition to fall programming as well as planning for upcoming winter
activities.

SUBJECT: Activity Center Report
August ReCap:
• Main event in August was Night to Unite at the Activity Center and Noon to Unite
at the 350 Evans Dining Site.Both events included food, door prizes and
entertainment. A combined total of 200 seniors attended
• Zumba Gold continues to draw new people to the Activity Center. Activity Center
staff has scheduled two more new classes; Zumba Gold Toning and Silver Sneakers
Sampler class which will begin in October.
• "Tell Your Elk River Story" contest concluded. The winning entry, The Healing Spot
was submitted by Pam Zaffke. This entry may be viewed inside the center as well as
in the display case located outside the Activity Center. Contest entries, including the
winning entry will also be on the city Powered byNature blog.
• August trips included Mystic Lake and the MN State Fair.
• Intergenerational program with New Horizons Academy held at the Activity Center
for the first time. Seniors and children enjoyed a craft project and Wii games.

*Note:Activity Center was closed on Tuesday,August 14th,as it is a voting site.There is an 85%increase in Activity Center
attendance over the 5 year period from August 2008(1068 attended)to August 2012(1980 attended).
Upcoming Events:
September is National Senior Center Month and many additional programs and activities
have been added to celebrate this special month. The SALT golf tournament was held at
Pinewood on September 5th. Twelve teams consisting of seniors and law enforcement staff
participated in this event. Other highlights of the month include a healthy eating
presentation,Wellness Expo and musical entertainment.
