Adopt the attached resolution proclaiming October 22-28, 2012, as Manufacturers Week in the Elk River.
Background/Discussion
For the past several years,the EDA has recognized Elk River manufacturers during Minnesota
Manufacturers Week. This year staff plans to undertake several new recognition initiatives.
On September 18, Elk River cohosted a Manufacturer's Connection event emphasizing education at Glen
Metalcraft in the City of Princeton. Roughly 20 regional manufacturers were in attendance at the event,
including J&J Machine, officials from Elk River High School and Salk Middle School, and ERHS
industrial technology instructors. Participants expressed a need for a closer relationship between schools,
students, and manufacturers in order to maintain a sufficient workforce.
To begin fostering the relationship between schools and manufacturers, staff will work with schools and
local manufacturers to offer tours of manufacturing facilities to students during Minnesota Manufacturers
Week. Students will learn about opportunities in manufacturing and network with manufacturing
professionals. A verbal update on participating manufacturers and dates and times of tours will be
provided at the Council meeting.
In addition to participating in the tours, staff will recognize Elk River manufacturers' contributions to the
local economy and workforce through social media outlets, the city's website, and in an ad in the Star
News.
Because of the positive feedback received, staff will continue to partner to hold quarterly manufacturer's
events.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ELK RIVER
PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 22 — OCTOBER 28, 2012, AS
MANUFACTURERS WEEK IN THE CITY OF ELK RIVER
WHEREAS, The manufacturing industry is a dynamic part of Minnesota's economy, and
promotion of this sector's strength, success, and high quality of life is an
integral part of Minnesota's economic development strategy; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing provides high-skill, high-wage jobs which significantly
contribute to Minnesota's high standard of living and economic vitality; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing has the second largest total payroll among business sectors in
Minnesota,providing$16.4 billion in wages; and
WHEREAS, Manufacturing produces $37 billion for the state economy and accounts for
the single most largest share of our gross domestic product at 15%; and
WHEREAS, Manufactured exports brought over$18.4 billion into the Minnesota
economy in 2011.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Mayor and City=Council of the City of
Elk River, does hereby proclaim the week of October 22-28, 2012, as Manufacturers Week
in the City of Elk River.
