Consider July Step Increase for Maintenance I Employee
Attached is a request from Street/Park Superintendent Phil Hals regarding an extra step in
July for Maintenance I employee Gary Lore. By skipping a step Gary will be at the same level
as another employee that was hired about eight months prior to Gary joining the city. The
city hired Gary at the entry level of Maintenance I and to replace Gary with a person of
equal experience would cost the city more in the future. I have discussed and reviewed this
request with the Finance Director and I support this request. This request requires Council
approval and the additional wages will come from the City Council Contingency Fund.

Gary Lore Wage Adjustment
I would like to recommend an extra step Increase for Gary Lore,
Maintenance I, who is our most recent hire.
Gary came to us with twenty years of construction experience and has
exceptional equipment operating skills. He also has many talents and
abilities that we find very useful for other tasks that are done by this
department.
This recommendation would move Gary from pay grade 8 level A ($12.8 I
per hour) to pay grade 8 level C ($ I $.$2 per hour) instead of Level B for his
annual step increase on July I, 2002. This would put him at the same pay
step as Steve Stoffers our second most recent hire. These two workers will
still be two pay steps below anyone else in the street/park department.
I feel that this increase is justified because of his job experience, work ethic
and YalUe to the city. My staff also supports this recommendation to retain
this excellent employee.
Recommendation:
Move Gary Lore from pay grade 8 level A to pay grade 8 level C on July I,
2002.
