Staff is recommending that the Parks and Recreation Commission give staff direction to remove the skate
park located at Lions Park for the following reasons:
1. Safety
2. Maintenance Cost
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Since its installation in 2004,the maintenance of the skate park has been an ongoing effort. The riding
surface panels need constant replacing or need to be refastened to the treated wood substructure.

The maintenance of the skate park has been an ongoing effort since its installation. The riding surface
panels need constant replacing or need to be refastened to the treated wood substructure. Over time,the
constant refastening of the riding surface with wood screws has destroyed the substructure to the point
that there is no longer any wood material left to fasten to. As a result, screws constantly work their way
above the riding surface resulting in tripping hazards.
The metal transition panels at the bottom of the ramps often are curling up and need to be bent back
down to provide a safe transition. In some cases they had to be fastened to the concrete which is not
recommended as it does not allow for expansion and contraction of the materials, creating other
problems.
Repair Costs
Because the riding surface panels cost approximately$300 per 4'x8' sheet, staff utilizes as much as
possible of each sheet. This result in using many smaller pieces causing extra seems which is not ideal for
a safe riding surface. Staff estimates they need about four sheets each year to replace broken/vandalized
sections.
Ongoing inspections indicate a majority of the substructure would have to be rebuilt to salvage a few
more years of use out of the skate park

skate park into safer conditions.
