Staff recommends the Parks and Recreation Commission approve the grant application to the Minnesota
Historical Society for funding to conduct an archeological survey of Bailey Point.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The purchase of the Bailey Point property was made possible through a Minnesota DNR Natural and
Scenic Area Grant that was approved on November 22, 2012. As part of the grant agreement, the city is
required to conduct an archeological survey prior to the final reimbursement of the grant funds for the
acquisition. The city will engage a professional archeologist and interested volunteers to complete the
survey project.
The project will be conducted to meet the standards of the Minnesota State Historical Preservation
Office. Public participation will be encouraged using the very successful methods used by St. Cloud State
University in the past. Volunteers will be paired with professional staff and encouraged to participate in
all aspects of the field work. Daily tours for be given for interested individuals. We expect that the
survey will take about one week, preferably during the month of June.
Staff is recommending that the funding for this required archeological project be paid for with a grant
through the Minnesota Historical Society. Part of the requirement in the grant process is to show
community support and the initial step is for the Parks and Recreation Commission to approve this
request for action.
