BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION Attached is the position description for the planning intern position that was approved with the 2013 budget. To better identify this position,we have given it the title of temporary planning assistant/intern because,while this is intended to be an opportunity for work experience, the candidate that is chosen does not necessarily need to be receiving school credit. Once the position description is approved,we will begin recruiting to fill this position. The position is funded for 1040 hours at$14.00 per hour. It is anticipated that the term of this position will be through the end of 2013. FINANCIAL IMPACT This position is included in the 2013 budget. Temporary Planning Assistant/Intern River Position Description Department: Immediate Supervisor: Community Operations and Development/ Community Operations and Development Planning Deputy Director Pay Grade: FLSA Status: Last Updated: (date) $12.00 to $14.00 per hour Non-Exempt 3/2013 Positions Supervised: N/A Position Summary This position provides work experience in exchange for assistance in the city's planning division. The Temporary Planning Assistant/Intern will assist the planning staff in a variety of functions as noted below. Essential Functions 1. Responds to requests from citizens and developers on planning and zoning issues. 2. Assists in the review of building plans,zoning permit applications and development proposals to assure compliance with requirements. 3. Assists planning staff in collecting and preparing data for various projects. 4. Assists in research and analysis of the comprehensive plan. 5. Conducts field work, collects parcel data and searches land reports. 6. Prepares maps and planning reports;produces sketches and renderings. 7. Assists planning staff at community meetings. May present report findings. 8. Researches funding sources and writes grant proposals. 9. Conducts basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service. 10. Researches and compiles information on a variety of planning issues from multiple sources. 11. Provides design ideas for development projects. 12. Conducts special studies as required. 13. Other essential job duties. A. Regular and timely work attendance. B. Follows all safety procedures. C. Participates in safety training. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ❑ Knowledge of planning principles,practices,and techniques. ❑ Skill to research and conduct studies related to property uses. ❑ Ability to communicate effectively,both orally and in writing, to a variety of groups. Page 1 ❑ Ability to work independently on tasks; follow through task completion. ❑ Ability to accurately interpret grading plans and surveys. ❑ Ability to conduct thorough on-site field inspections for items such as erosion control,tree preservation,grading and landscape installation. ❑ Ability to interpret and apply appropriate zoning ordinances, subdivision laws and regulations. ❑ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with planning commission, developers,residents, community groups, and other employees. ❑ Ability to effectively review and update maps. ❑ Proficiency with computer programs;word processing, spreadsheets,presentation. Minimum Qualifications ❑ Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning,Landscape Architecture,Architecture or related field or the ability to acquire one within 12 months. ❑ Valid driver's license.
