BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION The Elk River—Rogers VFW#5518 requested the Council adopt a proclamation recognizing the merits of buddy poppies and urging all patriotic citizens to wear a buddy poppy. Poppy Day is May 10, 2013. The poppy has become the traditional Memorial Day flower and the symbol of remembrance for the men and women who have lost their lives or health in the defense of our country. The Elk River—Rogers VFW#5518 has pledged to remind America annually of this debt through the distribution of this memorial flower. Funds raised from the sale of poppies are used to assist needy and disabled veterans, their families, and the widows and orphans of veterans. ATTACHMENTS ■ Proclamation Action Motion by Second by Vote Follow Up P 0 W E 0 E 0 0 r A "URE PROCLAMATION PROCLAIMING THE MERITS OF BUDDY POPPIES WHEREAS, the annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by governmental leaders since 1922; and WHEREAS, VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled veterans, and the proceeds of this worthy fundraising campaign are used exclusively for the benefit of disabled and needy veterans, and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans; and WHEREAS, the basic purpose of the annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars is eloquently reflected in the desire to"Honor the Dead by Helping the Living." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, on behalf of the City Council, that I,John J. Dietz,Mayor of the City of Elk River,Minnesota,do hereby urge the citizens of this community to recognize the merits of this cause by contributing generously to its support through the purchase of Buddy Poppies on May 10,2013, the day set aside for the distribution of these symbols of appreciation for the sacrifices of our honored dead. I urge all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms which we continue to enjoy as American citizens.
