BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION The Public Works and Parks Maintenance services are integral parts of our community and the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to their efficient operation. Their work and programs directly impact the health, safety, and comfort of this community but their success is dependent upon the efforts and skills of public officials and the dedicated personnel who staff the departments. July 31, 2013, has been selected as a day to recognize the value and benefits of the Public Works and Parks Departments. In addition to showing appreciation for their efforts it is also appropriate to celebrate the new maintenance facility with an Open House. This event is an opportunity for residents to reflect on the value they receive for their investments in Public Works and Parks through the daily maintenance and physical infrastructure necessary to support their daily needs as well the numerous services and programs provided. Enclosed within this packet is a proclamation to designate July 31, 2013, as Public Works &Parks Maintenance Day in the City of Elk River. FINANCIAL IMPACT None. ATTACHMENTS • Proclamation POWERED BY N:\Public Bodies\Agenda Packets\7-01-2013\xProc Action Requested-7 1 13.docx NAURE] �i Elk PROCLAMATION River r Public Works and Parks Maintenance Day WHEREAS,prosperous communities require reliable and efficient transportation systems for commerce,public safety, and leisure; and WHEREAS, flourishing communities invest in quality of life amenities that provide for and enhance healthy and active lifestyles; and WHEREAS,prudent communities plan and prepare for unexpected natural and man-made dangers and ensure today's activities are sustainable for future generations; and WHEREAS,public works and parks maintenance services are engaged to protect and maintain our important community assets such as streets,parks, and facilities that are an integral part of our everyday lives; and WHEREAS, the public support of resident taxpayers is vital to the effective operation of public works and parks maintenance programs to maintain streets and storm water systems,parks and trails, and public facilities, and sustain these important activities and amenities; and WHEREAS, the health, safety, and comfort of this community greatly depends on public works and parks maintenance services; and WHEREAS, the quality and effectiveness of public facilities, as well as their planning, design, and construction are dependent on the efforts and skills of public servants. NOW,THEREFORE,I,John J. Dietz,Mayor of the City of Elk River,MN,do hereby proclaim July 31, 2013, as Public Works and Parks Maintenance Day in the City of Elk River and officially dedicate the new Elk River Maintenance Facility as a community asset to preserve and protect the wellbeing and health of a prosperous community. FURTHERMORE, I call upon residents,businesses, and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the importance of effective public works and parks maintenance and recognize the contributions in which public works and parks maintenance officials make every day to our communities health, safety, comfort, and quality of life.
