4.9. SR 08-03-1998city of River MEMORANDUM Item #4.9. TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT: Mayor & City Council Pat Klaers, City/~mi istrator August 3, 1998~? Historical Society Contribution Request Attached for your information is the material the Mayor received regarding a contribution to the Sherburne County Historical Society. This contribution is for the planned new Heritage Center building in Becket. As the Council may recall, last year the Historical Society requested a $36,000 pledge over a three to five year period from the City of Elk River. This current $3,000 request is much more reasonable and is supported by staff with funds to come out of the council contingency fund. It should be noted that we may see additional requests in the future for this same project and these requests will have to be evaluated on a case to case basis depending upon available funds at the city level and how the Historical Society is doing in its efforts to raise money for the project. Recommendation Staff recommends the City Council approve a $3,000 contribution to the Historical Society for the Heritage Building project in the city of Becket with funding to come from the council contingency fund. 13065 Orono Parkway · P.O. Box 490 Elk River, MN 5533 0 Dear Mayor Hank Duitsman: As you know, the Sherburne County Historical Society is planning to build a new Heritage Center in Becker. The Center will preserve our county's history and provide county residents with rich educational opportunities. We have raised about $212,000 thus far. Our immediate goal is to match a $100,000 grant offered by Sherburne County. Toward that end we have raised $60,000. We are requesting that the City of Elk River support this project through a $3000 donation. As you can see from the donations list attached, a number of other cities and townships are supporting this project. We appreciate your consideration in this matter and invite you to call us if you have any further questions. Sincerely, Rachel Leonard President Kurt Kragness Executive Director enc/Annual Report SHERBURNE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY 13122 First Street, Becket, MN 55308 612-261-4433 · 1-800-932-2066 HERITAGE CENTER DONORS - CITIES AND TOWNSHIPS Cities Becket Big Lake Zimmerman Townships Becket Clear Lake Livonia Palmer Santiago Cash and Pledges 5,500 1,000 3,000 7,800 5,000 3,000 1,000 1,500 July 21, 1998
