Action Requested
Mayor Dietz to Proclaim October 21-26, 2013, as Minnesota Manufacturers Week in the City of Elk
River.
Background/Discussion
The State of Minnesota established Manufacturers Week to recognize the economic role local
manufacturing companies have in our economy. The Department of Employment and Economic
Development (DEED) is promoting the tagline "Dream it, do it" as the theme to encourage companies
to open their doors for public tours. Their goal is to show how manufacturing has changed, that high
tech jobs are available, and there is a large demand for skilled workers.
The city has coordinated with local manufacturers and Elk River High School to promote the need for
skilled workers and help the school update curriculum to better meet these needs.
Manufacturers Week is October 21-26, 2013. According to DEED,manufacturing is an important part
of Elk River's economy, employing over 1,000 people in the 53 manufacturing companies, or 11.2% of
total jobs and 15.8% of total payroll with an average salary of$52,104.
Additional Activities
Economic Development staff,in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce,Elk River High School
and local manufacturers, has organized a student tour of Crystal Distribution,Inc.,J &J Machine Inc.,
Great River Energy, and Metal Craft Machine&Engineering on Thursday, October 24. Participants will
learn about opportunities in manufacturing and network with manufacturing professionals.
In addition to participating in the tours, staff will recognize Elk River manufacturers' contributions to the
local economy and workforce through a variety of media outlets -including, social media, the city
website, and in the Star News.
