Subject: Street Light Committee
In years past, the Elk River Municipal Utilities utilized a street light committee to review
street light requests from our customers or police and make recommendation to this
commission. This committee consisted of Electrical Superintendent, Glenn Sundeen,
Chief of Police, Tom Zerwas, and a member of the Utility Commission, George Zabee.
With two of the three committee members retiring, the committee needless to say, has
been inactive this past year. The question is, does this commission desire to rejuvenate
this committee. The majority of the developed portions of Elk River already have street
lights, and as new developments are constructed, street lights are included per our
standards. Our street light policy is attached for your information.
Although street light requests are far and few between, the committee does provide a
formal process to handle requests and/or street light complaints. Staff recommends the
street light committee be formed.

MID-BLOCK STREET LIGHTING
In newly planed areas. street lights shall be installed at all major intersections and at mid-
block, provided that no lights are spaced closer than 300 feet. Street lighting layout shall
be approved by the Elk River Municipal Utilities and shall be consistent with the
standard type of lighting currently being utilized by the City to provide for a uniform
City Street Lighting System.
