Background/Discussion
Earlier this year, representatives from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company approached Chief
Cunningham to discuss nominating the Elk River Fire Department for a grant through the company's
Bucket Brigade program. This program is designed to provide financial assistance to fire departments
across the country to purchase life-saving firefighting and rescue equipment. Fire departments are
nominated by company employees who must complete a thorough application for individual
departments.
An application was submitted on behalf of the Elk River Fire Department for the purchase of a thermal
imaging camera for Rescue 1, the department's heavy rescue truck. Last month, the Fire Department
received news that it will be the recipient of an award from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company.
This is the third grant award from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. In June,2010, the
department received $25,000 to begin the replacement of hydraulic rescue equipment. In October,2007,
the department received $7,700 to purchase wildland personal protective equipment. According to a
January, 2013, report by the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, with the acceptance of this latest
award, Elk River will become the highest recipient of grant funding in Minnesota by the Fireman's Fund
Insurance Company.
