Proclamation - Manufacturers Week
Background
Manufacturers week is designed to showcase Minnesota's manufacturing
industries and to increase the general public's awareness of manufacturing's
importance in providing high wage, high skill jobs in our community.
Manufacturing employment is approximately 1,100 in Elk River based upon
information from the 1997 business retention and expansion surveys.
Manufacturing employment continues to grow as projects come on line:
· Sportech - 14jobs
· Dave Decker project - 30-40 jobs projected
· E & 0 Tool expansion - 7-10 jobs
· Ink Wizards - 2-3 jobs
· SuperMats (1999) - 7 jobs projected
Recommendation
Staff recommends adoption of the attached proclamation declaring the week
of October 12-16, 1998, to be City of Elk River, Minnesota Manufacturers
Week.

Manufacturing has the largest total payroll of any business sector in
Minnesota. Providing $16 billion in 1996 wages; and,
Manufacturing produces $27.1 billion for the state economy and is the
largest single share (19.2%) of our gross total product; and,
Manufacturing exports brought nearly $9.53 billion into the
Minnesota economy in 1997; and,
Manufacturing provides high skill, high wage jobs which significantly
contribute to Minnesota's high standard of living and economic
vitality; and,
Manufacturing contributed nearly $216 million in corporate income
taxes in Minnesota, more than any other business sector, and almost
28 percent of total corporate income taxes in 1998; and,
Manufacturing employment in Elk River is estimated to be
approximately 1,100, such jobs creating substantial benefit to our
communities economy.
Now, Therefore, I, Henry A. Duitsman, Mayor of Elk River, Minnesota, do
hereby proclaim the week of October 12-16, 1998, to be
City of Elk River, Minnesota Manufacturers Week
