8.0. PRSR 02 12 2003 ITEM 1 8. J r City of Elk River MEMORANDUM TO: Park and Recreation Commission FROM: Michele Bergh, Recreation Manager DATE: February 6, 2003 SUBJECT: Staff Report Facility Subcommittee We continue to meet and have one more meeting scheduled to come up with a recommendation for tournaments and recap everything we've covered thus far. We hope to have recommendations for the April meeting for your consideration. Wellness Committee The Wellness Committee held their kickoff event in January. We had about 35 employees attend. Every employee received a folder with a calendar of events for the year, a chart with recommendations for preventative care, an overview of the exercise challenge we will be doing as a city in conjunction with the program the county offers, a parks and trails map, a recreation program guide, and a chart to use to track their physical activity if they want. The information seemed to be well received. We have also been running"Women on Weights" after work that has had 6-9 women attend each time in the wellness room at city hall. We have set the room up with stations to work various muscle groups as well as stations for cardio. The recreation department also has 8 employees participating in the U Pass program at this time. We are very excited about the opportunities this group will provide and look forward to serving the employees. Girl Power/Just for Girls We have our kickoff events scheduled for the 7th and 8th of February. Both events are full and, between the two,we are serving 70 girls between the grades of 2°`' and 5`h. We have a waiting list of about 10 girls at this time. These programs are intended to assist young girls in developing positive self-images, learning goal-setting skills, and encouraging them to be all that they can be. We are excited about these offerings and hope to continue these programs well into the future. U Pass The U Pass program is still going strong. We have people purchasing passes for March and April already. Warming House Warming House and rink use has been slow this year due to the different weather we've experienced. We saw a large increase with the snow for a couple of days. Open Gyms Our open gyms at the Boys and Girls Club have been going well. The adult ones have been attended the most and we've had a few requests for a basketball league. We used to have one and when non-resident fees were added, since 70% of the teams were non-residents, it stopped getting enough registrations to run. We will look to add a recreational basketball league next winter. Summer Programming T-ball registration has started already and we are beginning to work on additional summer programs. One new addition will be to our theme day program. We will now be offering 5 full days of programming as an option for people. One of these days will be an "All Around Town" day where we will go to various parks and recreational businesses in the area for activities. Our next program guide will cover May-August. Cabin Fever Day Cabin Fever Day was a huge success. Every business we have spoken to is interested in participating again next year. We offered a free Yoga class as one of our opportunities and had 29 people attend. We are planning on this being an annual event on the last Saturday of January. We'll be setting criteria for businesses/organizations to participate to make it easy to coordinate. Egg Hunt We have an egg hunt planned for Lions Park on April 13th that will be followed by a free open skate (with a donation for CAER) at the arena. This event was new to Elk River last year (last year's was done at the arena) and was very well attended. Ice Show The ice show planning is underway. This year's theme is Beauty and the Beast. We have 70 participants at this time.
