Work Processes
The first step was to meet with the main volunteers of my project Dave Anderson and John
Kallemeyn to discuss the main tasks required in my project.
Dave Anderson is the Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the official volunteer Park
Steward for Woodlands Trails Park and the Director of Concrete Quality for Cretex.
John Kallemeyn is the Quality Materials Engineer for Cretex.
The time to complete the various tasks is outlined in my attached project log in the back of this
notebook. The main tasks include the following: construction of the form; acquisition of supplies
and materials; the preparation and mixing of the concrete; pouring concrete into the form; measuring
of mile distances, site preparedness, construction of the support frames for the concrete markers; and,
then finally, the installation of the mile markers. I will provide a step by step list of these main tasks.
Construction of the form
In order to make sure that the concrete forms have a smooth fine
finish, we decided to use Finn form in the construction of the
form for the mile markers. This has a veneer surface film panel
to make the surface smooth. We designed the form to be six
inches at the top to 8 3/4 inches at the base and 48 inches in height.
Dave Anderson donated the Finn form. John Kallemeyn used
the saws and equipment at his house garage to cut the Finn form
wood. We cut the form wood into the proper size and shapes
decided on by both John and Dave. I assisted in
connecting the board together with screws. We
used 2 x 4 lumber donated by John to construct the
base for the form to become free standing.

Acquisition of Supplies and Materials nffsr���
Dave and John had a meeting with me and my Dad
who is the Elk River Parks and Recreation Director.
We discussed the materials and supplies needed for this project. We
discussed that Cretex would donate all of the materials and chemicals related to the concrete.

the internet. I went shopping with John to Menards to purchase many of the supplies needed in the

project such as nails, petroleum jelly, garbage bags, rubber gloves and duct tape. We purchased the
supplies using the City of Elk River account.
Preparation and mixing of the Concrete
This was the most important and time consuming tasks in my project.
It was time consuming because we had to measure each batch and we
needed to mix enough concrete for six separate mile markers. In
order for the concrete to be a self - consolidating type concrete — very
smooth with no abrasions or noticeable imperfections- we had to use
an exact mixture of concrete chemicals and aggregate. This was
supervised and measured by John Kallemeyn who would direct all of
the volunteers in the exact quantities needed in the mixing of the
concrete.
The chemical materials required and the timing of the mixture in the
concrete mixer was calculated by John using the concrete mix
evaluator (Exhibit Q. John would show all of us how important it
was to design the exact amount of air, chemical and water in the
concrete. After the mixing was complete, John would test the
concrete by measuring the water content. John would show me how to
test the concrete and I was able to test the last two molds by myself. If we
satisfied by the results of water density, then we would stop the mixing ar

Pouring concrete into mold
Before pouring concrete into the mold we had to clean the inside of the mold and attach the rubber
letters and number onto the mold by measuring their exact locations. We would then place four re-
bar over four feet in length in the mold to strengthen the concrete. We would take the concrete from
the mixer with a pitcher and then pour the concrete into the sono tube.

Measuring of mile distances
It was the decision of the city to start the 0 mile next to County Road 33 in
Elk River. I used a city measuring wheel while Dave Anderson drove a
city utility vehicle. I would start at mile location 0 and measure one mile
distances to the dead end of the Great Northern Trail at the city line. We
decided on six mile markers with the following locations: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 %.
The last mile marker was 4 3/4 mile. Each mile marker location was
indicated with red paint and ribbons.
Site Preparedness
We used a city weed wacker to clear the area at each mile marker location.
I then measured the distance from the trail of 37 inches and used a post
hole digger to dig 3 feet holes at each mile marker location. The 3 -feet
holes will later be filled with wet concrete for the mile markers to be
inserted.
Construction of support frames
I worked with Dave Anderson and John Kallemeyn to construct the wood support frames for the
mile markers. We used 2 x 4 lumber to construct one foot wood frames with re -bar. The frames
would be placed over the holes of each mile marker.
Installation of the mile markers
First, we placed all of the mile markers and needed tools on a
flatbed trailer. I needed one adult volunteer to operate a city
tractor to guide and insert the mile markers and one volunteer to
drive a city vehicle to transport the mile markers on a flatbed
trailer. Michael Hecker, my Dad, would drive to /from Cretex to
get the wet concrete delivered in 50 gallon barrows for the
foundation.

We started with the 0 mile marker and performed the
following same steps at each mile marker: 1- Clean and
clear the site with a shovel. 2- I placed each support frame
in its exact location by centering it over the hole and
measuring a distance of 37- inches from the asphalt trail.
3- All of us would assist in shoveling wet concrete from
the barrel into the hole. I would make sure that the hole
was filled up to the top of the wood frame with concrete.
4- The adult volunteer in the tractor would lift up the
concrete marker from the flatbed trailer and all of us
would assist in guiding the marker into place using levels
to make sure it was standing straight up and level. 5- In
some locations, I would cut guiding wire instructed by
Dave Anderson to anchor some of the concrete mile
markers into place to keep them level. 6- I would install
orange snow fencing around the mile markers to keep
people away from them so that it could all cure property.
7 -1 would take down the snow fencing at the end of the
day. 8- at the end of the installation we cleaned the tools,
equipment and vehicles with a power washer provided by
Cretex.
