Meeting was called to order by Chair Helliwell at 7:10 AM.
Agenda & Minutes for meeting of December 11, 2003 were approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
1) Program Committee - Ken Ebel updated group - NYPUM (dirt bike program) was considered
successful in 2003 & will be conducted again in 2004. Family Camp & Camp Manitou programs will
be continued in 2004. Youth in Government could not be conducted in 2003 as no teacher/supervisor
could be secured. Will try again in 2004.
Exploring collaborative effort with Boys & Girls Club to use the Club facility as drop-off site. Would
provide necessary safe facility for Y programs & would also provide some additional revenue for Boys
& Girls Club. Discussions continue.
Will conduct Senior Citizen Partnership programs again.
Planning for a new cooperative program with Police Dept - Kids & Cops.
T. McKinney will put together a brief list of programs & descriptions, along with approximate costs to
run the programs.
2) Communications Committee - Ed Stoutenberg reported that Cedric Olson has written a new article,
which will run in Star News soon. Group is interested in creating a sign that can be used to post at
various sites - mobile sign. Will need City permit. Example of use would be at Boys & Girls Club as
notice of drop-off site. Jim Boyle of Star News would like to interview committee members & run a
series of articles about activities and plans for the NorthStar YMCA.
3) Finance Committee - Helliwell reported that Nick Haidos would be late or is out of town_- Separate
"Restricted Fund" account has been established at NW YMCA & contains balance of $600. (Haidos
joined the group later - no additional comments.)
4) Additional Reports - T. McKinney reported on discussions with Boys & Girls Club regarding possible
joint activities such as Camp Manitou, drop-off site, & other parmership possibilities. There was
discussion about possible community concerns regarding competition rather than seeing the two
organizations as partners offering complimentary programs.
Michele Bergh informed the group of possible parmerships between Community Rec programs and
YMCA participation: These would be opportunities for visibility for the Y as well as a chance to
expand the Community programs. Example noted is Cabin Fever Day. Other opportunities may come
up soon.
5) NW YMCA Board meetings - Bill Helliwell attended the November meeting and plans to attend the
January meeting. Joni Lawrence & Stephanie Klinzing will also attend. These 3 individuals will be
the official NorthStar YMCA representatives to the NW Y Board.
6) Strategic Planning Task Group - Ron Touchette introduced the two new Student Members - Erica
Oelke & Katie Ronallo. Both will also participate in Program Committee.
Ron again discussed need for change to organizational structure and more substantive information
available for fund raising & for gaining community support. He described YMCA "model" structure
& advocated working with Tina Scheid to develop community support & to conduct community
campaign. Ms. Scheid briefly discussed materials available, structure & timing.
R. Touchette made a motion to Authorize conduct of a "Y Partners Campaign" for the NorthStar
YMCA over the next several months. Eberley second, motion passed.
After further discussion, R. Touchette made a motion to: Examine & develop organizational
models to consider for adoption of a formal organizational plan & structure for NorthStar
YMCA- Action to be taken at the next meeting to adopt. S. Klinzing seconded & motion passed:
Material is to be presented to members for consideration prior to the next meeting.
R. Touchette also made a motion to change the name of this group to: NorthStar YMCA
Community Board, to reduce confusion over committee & board names & to help clarify
responsibilities. P. Klaers seconded, Motion passed after discussion.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30AM.
