Background/Discussion
The National Donate Life Month observance was established in 2003 to promote a greater understanding
about the life-saving benefits of donation.
Princeton Mayor Paul Whitcomb recently sent a message to area cities bringing this observance to our
attention and asked if local leaders would bring this message to their communities. Mayor Whitcomb has
a personal interest in this important cause. Unfortunately,his wife is on the transplant list for a liver.
In a national effort to support and raise awareness for organ and tissue donation and transplantation,
cities are requested to proclaim April as Donate Life Month.

PROCLAMATION
A Proclamation Designating April 2014 as Donate Life Month
WHEREAS, April is National Donate Life Month;and
WHEREAS, Organ, eye,and tissue donation is a gift which extends hope and healing
to those in need; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 120,000 men,women, and children in the United States and
approximately 3,000 Minnesota residents are awaiting a life-saving
transplant;and
WHEREAS, Sadly, an average of 18 patients die every day while waiting for a
transplant, simply because the organ they needed was not available in
time; and
WHEREAS, One organ, eye, and tissue donor can save or improve the lives of up to
50 people; and
WHEREAS, Minnesota is a leader in registered organ, eye, and tissue donors. Anyone
can become a potential donor regardless of age,race, or medical history
by indicating their preference on their state ID or by registering online
through either Donate Life Minnesota or Lifesource, one of America's
leading organ procurement organizations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED on behalf of the City of Elk River, I,John
J. Dietz,hereby proclaim April 2014 as Donate Life Month,and encourage residents to
consider becoming an organ donor.
