To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Date: April 2,2014
Subject: Director's Report
This report is a monthly highlight of our Department's activities informing the Commission
on items related to collaborations, strategic planning, staff changes/ development, and park
operations.
Parks Maintenance Position
Staff continues to review the 207 applications that were received and has narrowed the list to
a workable number of first round interviews. We hope to start initial interviews in April.
Houlton Property
No changes on the Houlton Property update.
We continue to work with the Conservation Fund to look for other sources of grant money
for the Houlton property. The Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Conservation Fund does
have a May 14`h 2014 deadline. We are currently holding off on renewing the LOI until we
have a better sense of possible funding.
Pinewood Golf Course
Pinewood Golf Course will be closed for the 2014 season. The City is in litigation with the
former owners of Pinewood Golf Course regarding the golf course purchase.Unfortunately,
meditation has failed to resolve the matter and the case will be heard in court in September.
At the advice of our legal counsel, the City Council has agreed to discontinue golf course
operations pending the formal legal decision. We plan to maintain the course in a respectful
state to ensure there is no long-term damage to greens or fairways so that it is relatively easy
to return to a playable condition.
